ALATbyWema is Nigeria’s first fully digital bank currently available on Android, iOS and Web.
It can be difficult to convince business owners and big companies to give discounts or price slashes especially when it is not “a festive period” or during “typical black Fridays”. Customers tend to use the app for just transfers and receiving money while using our competitor’s app due to the value they get (discount and cash backs), which doesn’t help with our own product stickiness.
We want to encourage the customers to have a money saving-mindset and as well as having access to premium services from our partners with ease and trust that their money is safe.
In-line with the bank’s budget allocation, the business goals are to:
Increase product stickiness.
Grow the income.
Increase New to Bank (NTB) transacting customers.
Increase brand awareness.
Introducing the deals & discount feature called “ALAT Reward” is the Partnership team’s way of serving our customers better. A survey of our current customers was carried out, majority mentioned that “having access to deals & discount and being able to pay with their bank account is something they would really love”. This is also coming at a time when Nigeria is currently trying to promote online and cashless policy.
I worked in an Agile Scrum team and the development process were in sprints, broken down based on the Job to be done. The whole process was not linear and sometimes I had to skip an aspect if it doesn’t relate to the particular PBI I’m working on.
01
During the foundational research, both quantitative and quality analysis in collaboration with the customer management team.
The insights gotten were:
Gen Zs and Millennials (18 - 35) were excited and open to the idea of saving money through discounts.
Gen X and Baby boomers (Above 40years) were mostly intrigued about the idea
02
This stage starts with the user story review with the Scrum product owner and other key stakeholders after the survey, interviews, competitor’s research and feature prioritisation on the backlog.
Task: The user will be able to pay for an available deal using the ALAT app
03
At least 5 different sketches were made for each screen to iterate faster based on the pain points identified.
The flow for to view, filter and pay for deals.

Study type: Moderated usability study
Location: ALAT Towers
Participants: 2 Engineers, 1 QA, 1 Partnership team staff and 1 end user
Length: 15-20 mins, followed by a system usability scale
Goal: Determine if users can complete the core tasks within the prototype of the app. Determine if the app is difficult to use.
Several rounds of usability studies were conducted with the help of the in-house QAs, one with the wireframe and one with the high fidelity prototype. Both usability studies helped refine the high-fidelity prototype and improve user experience.
Visibility: Users need to be able to see more deals to minimize the scrolling.
Choices: Users need to be able to narrow down their choice.
Search: Users need to be able to search for their favorite vendor.
Code: The discount code generated should be easy to copy to the user’s clipboard.
QR Code: A nice to have to enable the verifiers redeem code faster.
Deals Screen Redesign: A nice to have to enable the verifiers redeem code faster.

After the first version went live on the playstore and app store, we noticed different devices were rendering the overlay differently. This lead to the redesign of the deals screen.
Viewing and paying for available deals on the ALAT app.

Onboard on the platform as a partner / vendor.
Andriod n iOS are live on the playstore and app store for the verifier/partner’s app.
We’ve onboarded over 1000 Partners like iFitness, Showmax to give discount to the customers on the platform.
Had a second iteration during the 4th quarter; an API integration with a major deals & discount vendor to provide more deals to our customer in-app.
We had to reprioritize modules within the partners dashboard to meet up with the timeline given to the business by the tech team.
Reshuffling of the scrum team working on this project, affected the initial timeline that was estimated.
Rewards turned out to be a big project and I had several learning/teachable moments; from collaborating with the product owners to understand the business side of thing…to collaborating with the engineers with the aim to understand what’s technically feasible based on the API documentation; amongst others.
I learnt to present design explorations to stakeholders, and to give and receive feedback.
At the time of writing this case study, the team went to store with the 3rd iteration to the Rewards in-app UI based on customer’s feedback on the 1st and 2nd iteration.
Currently updating the partnership’s team dashboard to achieve the user goals more efficiently.
Conducting further usability studies to account for likely edge case(s) and keep making iterations based on the insights.
